Import and export quizzes

Back up a Quinn quiz, move it to another store, or author questions in a spreadsheet and review catalog matches before importing.

Updated 2026-10-27

Quiz transfers are free on every plan. Every import creates a new draft; it never replaces an existing quiz or publishes automatically. Only asking Quinn for replacement suggestions uses AI credit. Outcome destinations remain literal store paths and resource IDs; review them in the destination store before publishing.

Export a quiz

  1. Open Quizzes and find the quiz to export.
  2. Choose Export quiz file for a complete backup, including question types, placeholders, catalog scope, logic, design, translations and settings. Choose Export spreadsheet to edit questions, answers and mappings in a spreadsheet.
  3. Keep the downloaded file as your backup, or open Quinn in the destination store to import it. Shopper responses, leads, events, analytics, revenue and experiment routing are excluded.

Import into this store

  1. Open Quizzes and choose Import quiz.
  2. Choose a JSON or CSV file up to 2 MB and click Review file. No quiz has been created at this point.
  3. Check the question and answer counts, matched catalog references and every reference that needs attention. Products can match by their existing ID, handle, SKU or exact title. Collections and catalog terms are checked against the destination store. Ambiguous matches are left for review.
  4. Optionally choose Ask Quinn for replacements. This uses AI credit. Review the suggested replacements and select only those you want to apply. Suggestions are never selected automatically.
  5. Choose Import as a new draft, then Open draft. If the original handle is already used, the new draft gets a fresh handle. Existing quizzes remain unchanged.
  6. Resolve outstanding references in the editor, check discount codes in Shopify, preview the shopper path and publish when ready. The current app permissions cannot verify discount codes, so a code is always listed for your review.

Start with a spreadsheet

Choose Download CSV template on the import screen. Keep its header row and fill in question, answer and recommendation columns. Use repeated question and answer keys to add more mappings to the same answer. The reference columns can carry product handles, SKUs and titles for matching in another store. For product mappings you can enter handle:your-product-handle or sku:YOUR-SKU in the mapping value column when you do not have a Shopify product ID. Save as CSV; XLSX files are not supported. The JSON format is the recommended complete backup.

In the question_type column, use SINGLE, MULTI, DROPDOWN, FREE_TEXT, BUDGET_SLIDER, NAME or PAGE exactly. SINGLE, MULTI and DROPDOWN use answer rows. FREE_TEXT, BUDGET_SLIDER, NAME and PAGE have no answer options: add one row with the question fields and leave the answer and mapping columns blank. The question_placeholder column supplies the optional input hint. Use question_body and question_image_url for an explainer page’s prose and optional HTTPS image. NAME steps are always optional. Older 23-column templates remain supported. Keep the format_version column from the downloaded template.

Treat the metadata column in an exported CSV as part of the file: it preserves quiz settings that do not fit in ordinary spreadsheet columns. Cells that could be spreadsheet formulas are escaped for safety. Import restores Quinn’s escape format. Do not remove those safety prefixes while editing.

Review images and catalog scope

Catalog scope is transferred with the quiz and its product and group references are checked against the destination catalog. The review shows how many selections limit the quiz, or that the quiz uses all products.

Explicit image URLs in answers, logos, backgrounds and side images are preserved as snapshots. The original host must keep those images available. Each URL is listed for your review; Quinn does not upload, copy or automatically replace the image. Check the images before publishing. Brand logo, square logo and cover selectors use the destination store’s current brand images automatically.

When a file cannot be imported

Unknown question types or fields appear in a blocked compatibility review with their paths and values. They are never silently removed, and no import action is available. Keep the original file and use a compatible export or edit a copy. Unknown file versions, malformed logic, unsafe image addresses, invalid settings and files above the size or item limits are also rejected before anything is created. Re-export from the current Quinn app or correct the CSV using the template. Competitor exports need an adapter and are not accepted directly.
