How products get picked

What AI Matching considers, how budget answers, picks and excludes change the results, and what exact and closest matches mean.

Updated 2026-10-06

When a shopper finishes the quiz, AI Matching reads their answers against your catalog and chooses the products to show. You do not have to tag products or connect answers to them. Picks let you steer the result when you want to.

What it can pick from

  • Products published to your Online Store.
  • Products that are not sold out. A product with variants is skipped when none of its variants can be bought. A product without variants is kept.
  • Up to 2,500 products. The list is refreshed about every 10 minutes, so a change in your catalog can take a few minutes to show.

The order things happen in

  1. Excludes and budgets narrow the list. Products removed by an Exclude pick or by a budget answer are never shown, whatever AI Matching thinks.
  2. AI Matching reads the answers against the products that are left and chooses the ones that fit.
  3. Your picks go first. Products you picked for the shopper's answers are shown first, but only when AI Matching agrees they fit the shopper's other answers too. A pick that does not fit is not forced in.

Budget questions

An answer whose only pick is a price range works as a hard budget. In the answer's picks, choose Products in a price range and fill in From (the lowest price, included), Up to (the highest price, not included) or both. Products outside the range are removed before AI Matching starts. If a quiz has several budget questions, a product has to fit every one of them. The price compared is the price shown on the result card. If nothing is in budget, the shopper sees "We couldn't find a match — try different answers."

Picks and excludes

  • For each answer, click Add products and choose from Add to this answer: A whole collection, One specific product, Products with a tag, Products of a type or Products in a price range.
  • How high should it appear? sets the strength of a pick: In the mix, Push it higher or Push it hardest. Stronger picks come before weaker ones.
  • Use this pick: Recommend or Exclude. Products that match this pick never appear in results when this answer is selected. If a shopper selects several answers, the excludes of all of them apply. A question the shopper skipped, or that was hidden by your question flow, contributes nothing.
  • An answer with no picks is fine. The editor says "No picks. AI Matching searches your whole catalog."

Exact and closest matches

  • An exact match is a product that fits every answer the shopper gave.
  • When fewer than 3 products fit exactly, the list is topped up with near matches that fit at least one answer. Those are labelled Closest match.
  • When nothing fits every answer, the shopper sees up to 3 of the closest products with the notice "Nothing matches every answer, so here's the closest."
  • With Show answer match count on, each card shows how many of the shopper's answers it matched. With Show answer tags on result cards on, it lists which answers they were.
  • Up to 24 products can be delivered; the block shows the first few and a button to reveal more.

When AI credit runs out

When it runs out, new AI requests pause. Your quizzes stay live with matching based on your saved product picks and rules. In that mode the quiz uses only products reached by the picks on the answers the shopper chose, ranked by their strength. An answer with no picks adds nothing, so a quiz without picks has nothing to show until credit returns. To keep a quiz useful when credit runs out, add picks to its answers. Credit is explained in Plans and AI credit.
